Who Does the Event Benefit?

2005 Horse of a Different Color benefits the C.A.R.E. (Children At Risk Evaluation) Center and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Akron Children's Hospital.

In 1987, Akron Children's Hospital established the Children At Risk Evaluation (C.A.R.E.) Center to better evaluate and initiate treatment for children of suspected physical or sexual abuse and neglect.

A team of physicians, nurses and social workers see scheduled patients referred by private physicians, law enforcement agencies, child protection agencies and other community agencies.

The center provides a quiet, structured and unhurried atmosphere for examination and interview. The C.A.R.E. Center team also provides consultation when abuse is suspected for a child on an inpatient unit.

When newborns are critically ill or premature, they need the intensive care provided by a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) such as the one at Akron Children's Hospital. The 59-bed unit is staffed by neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners, as well as nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, lactation consultants, dietitians and a variety of other specialists who focus on caring for medically fragile infants.
