2003 Horse - "Horseshoe"

Artwork Description:
Armed with scissors and a little muscle power, the students from Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts tore apart old pairs of shoes, leather purses and funky belts to make a form-fitting sheath for their colt. With the help of art teachers Julie Hogarth and Susan Yingling, the students carefully molded each scrap of leather to the horse’s rippling curves celebrating the achievements of both man and horse. Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts is a magnet school for students in grades fourth through eighth. Students audition for entry in one of five arts areas including dance, drama, vocal music, instrumental music and visual art. The Miller South PTA and West Akron Kiwanis sponsored this colt.

Artist: Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts

Horseshoes was the selected name for the colt because we let all students get involved by bringing in old shoes, which were then cut apart and applied to the horse. The students were guided by art teachers Julie Hogarth and Susan Yingling.
